Fit A Keg Full Of Coffee Into A Coffee Urn

The coffee urn stores coffee like a keg stores beer. A keg stores its contents cold and under pressure. You do not want cold carbonated coffee, however. An urn stores large amounts of brewed coffee and keeps it at the proper serving temperature. Urns are perfect for serving coffee at large gatherings that last a long time.

There are two general types of urns for coffee service. The first type both brews and stores the coffee. It uses the percolation method of coffee brewing. The other type of urn simply stores the coffee. The coffee must be brewed in separate coffee makers and poured into the urn, which keeps it warm.

Urns keep coffee warm either by insulation in the container, or by an electric heating element. The electric urn is beneficial to large functions that last a long time, because the coffee stays heated for the duration.

Urns hold various amounts of coffee. Smaller urns hold 12 to 30 cups of coffee (about 1-2 gallons). Larger units can contain up to 50 or 60 cups of coffee (almost 4 gallons). Urns dispense coffee by gravity feed through a spigot near the bottom. Look for an urn with a level indicator that shows how much coffee remains in the container. This feature is also called a freshness indicator. When the level gets low, prepare to refill the urn or to brew another batch of coffee in it.

Urns can be used for other beverages besides coffee. Tea can be brewed before an event and be kept warm in the urn. Be sure to label the urn contents, or there will be lots of disappointed coffee drinkers. Fill an urn with hot chocolate or cocoa for your ski party. Hot spiced apple cider is another winter beverage that keeps well in an urn.

Consider serving cold beverages from an urn too. Powdered drink mixes for children can be served from an urn, as long these drinks are chilled before being placed in the urn. Remember to keep the urn unplugged as well. You can tape the end of the plug as a reminder. Children can easily serve themselves using the urn spigot if it is placed at the correct level. The coffee urn is a versatile container for serving almost any drink that needs to be dispensed in large amounts.
